Major McKendrick was deployed to the planet Minerva with his unit, the British Army Cold Stream Guards. The Cold Stream Guards and other Earth Forces suffered heavy losses at the Battle of Mandrake Ridge, after which he went into hiding and began monitoring the transmissions of the Chigs and learning their language. The Wild Cards found him on the planet while attempting to make a rendezvous to be extracted back to the USS SARATOGA and the Major helps them reach their destination.[1]
